The Mu'o

Internship Program

Our Mu’o Internship Program is designed to empower Native Hawaiian innovators by providing hands-on tech experiences grounded in cultural values. This high-touch, selective program supports interns through real-world projects, mentorship, and professional development—all with the goal of preparing them for careers and leadership in Hawaiʻi’s growing innovation economy. At Purple Maiʻa, we believe that the best learning happens when you’re building something that matters. Join us and gain practical experience in a supportive environment, while being guided by values that matter.

The Project

Participants gain experience building technologies that address urgent challenges in Hawaiʻi, such as water monitoring tools for loko iʻa, data systems for land stewardship, and community-based climate tech. They also explore ideation, rapid prototyping, and project incubation, learning to move ideas from concept to real-world application. Projects are developed collaboratively, with cross-disciplinary teams and guidance from experienced mentors. The program blends technical skill development with leadership training and cultural connection. Our goal is to cultivate “Purple Builders”— individuals equipped with the tools, mindset, and values to lead in startups, social enterprises, or civic tech roles.

Program Activities

  • Skills Development – Students will build a strong foundation in technical, analytical, or design competencies by working and completing a tangible deliverable (i.e. prototype, dashboard, report, or digital product) that demonstrates applied learning and showcases their ability to solve real-world programs

  • ʻĀina Engagement Day – Students will deepen their understanding of stewardship of land and natural resources through hands-on work restoring and maintaining local ecosystems. This activity connects participants to the ʻāina and fosters a sense of kuleana to care for our natural resources.

  • Company Visits – Students will explore the landscape of Hawaiʻi’s growing tech ecosystem. These company visits will provide valuable insight into career pathways, emerging technologies, and organizational culture while offering direct opportunities for networking with professionals and potential employers.

  • Guest Speaker Sessions – Students will engage with professionals across different sectors through live talks and Q&A  sessions. These firsthand accounts provide critical exposure to diverse career pathways, industry challenges, and lessons learned, helping students better prepare and navigate their own career paths.

  • Community Service – A core value of the program is giving back to the community that has supported us. Students will contribute to meaningful activities such as volunteering at local shelters, supporting food distribution efforts, and engaging with other non profit organizations. These experiences foster empathy, civic responsibility, and social awareness, key attributes of effective leadership.

  • Career Development – Students will receive personalized career support, including resume and Linkedin building, interview preparation, personal branding, and one-on-one mentorship. The program also provides job search assistance to help participants successfully transition into the workforce.
